CHANGE OF EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS
Reminder that the new non emergency number 101 has gone live today – Monday 7th November 2011.
This number replaces the 0300 300 99 99 number, which will gradually be phased out before being turned off completely on Monday 9th January 2012. Until the number is turned off, a message will be posted on the line directing callers to the new 101 number.
Calls to the 101 number will be answered by control room staff here in the Force - residents will not find themselves speaking to someone in another part of the country and there are many great benefits to the introduction of the new non-emergency number.
In an emergency, when a crime is taking place or when a person is in immediate danger, people should always call 999.
The 101 number can be used when people simply want to talk to a local police officer, or for other non-emergencies including:
• reporting that a car has been stolen;
• reporting that property has been damaged;
• reporting suspected drug use or dealing taking place;
• reporting a minor traffic collision;
• giving police information about crime in their area;
When a call is made to 101, you will hear a recorded message announcing that you are being connected to their local police Force. If you are located on a boundary between two or more forces, the message will give you a choice of which police Force to be connected to.
Police call handlers will then answer the calls and if the incident is recognised as an emergency, the operator will put you through to 999.
Calls to 101 will cost 15p per call, irrespective of how long the call may last and applies to all landlines and mobile phones.
Message dated 11/11/2011
For the information of all members on the Bassetlaw East Clayworth/ Sturton beat area, I am pleased to disclose that no crimes have been reported across the beat area between 02/11/2011 and 10/11/2011.
Much credit must be given to community members who report suspicious persons, suspicious vehicles and suspicious activity as it happens. Support and vigilance, such as this, has certainly assisted in maintaining relatively low crime figures on the area.
Please remember the new non urgent number for Nottinghamshire Police is 101.

Nottinghamshire Trading Standards have received fresh reports that bogus charity collectors are operating in your area. Individuals have been seen handing out leaflets and recycling bags when visiting homes across the region requesting donations of clothing, shoes and handbags which they imply will be recycled to raise funds for charity.
The most effective way to prevent bogus charity collectors is for you to be aware and on your guard. If you are uncertain about the identity of a collector then ask to see formal identification or contact the charity directly for confirmation.
If you believe a bogus charity collector is operating in your area please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

Regular readers of my police report will note that the number of crimes committed across the beat area in January is more than the monthly mean number for the beat area for the current policing year. The first week, or so, of the month saw six, or half, of the above crimes being reported to our control room. Some of the crimes have occurred at particularly remote locations and on the outskirts of the areas parishes. There has been an increase, in January, in the number of suspicious circumstances incidents being reported across the area and I thank you all for your continued vigilance and support. Please continue to report any such incidents and include similar activity in the remotest of locations.
On Wednesday 18/01/2012 there was the first East Bassetlaw Rural Group Priority Setting meeting at Retford Town Hall. At this meeting the results of the completion of the community survey forms was shared with attendees. It was revealed that the three priorities, for the coming three months, for rural East Bassetlaw would be vehicle nuisance - including speeding motor vehicles, off road motor bikes and illegal parking, rowdy/ nuisance behaviour, and environmental issues - including dog fouling, litter and fly tipping. At the meeting there were representatives from other agencies including Fire Service. I was advised by a representative from the Fire Service that the service are able to attend community group and organisation meetings to deliver a variety of presentations including the effects of driving too fast, using a mobile phone whilst driving and drink driving. I know that there are quite a lot of community groups across the beat area that have invited guest speakers and, if you would like further information in relation to booking a representative from the service, please contact me on the number below.
At the next meeting representatives of other agencies including the Highways department, Youth Services, Environmental Services and Environmental Health departments are expected to attend.
Speeding motor vehicles remains the top priority for residents of rural East Bassetlaw. Presently, there are active speed watch teams in North Leverton, Sturton le Steeple and Wheatley. Even so, the groups are always on the look out for more volunteers. Clayworth, Hayton and Clarborough parishes presently do not participate in this type of activity. If any resident would like to volunteer for either a scheme that is active or one that is presently dormant please contact me and I will pass on the details to the respective coordinator. Police speed gun work will be completed ongoing to deter vehicle speeding and to support the community speed watch groups.
Anti social behaviour is the second priority. The Bassetlaw East Clayworth/ Sturton beat area is fortunate to have very low levels of this type of behaviour. From collated data, it is apparent that Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings remain the prevalent times for this type of activity. East Bassetlaw beat teams conduct Operation Animism on these evenings where known hot spot areas are patrolled to reduce/ eliminate anti social behaviour ongoing. This operation has now joined up with initiatives like the red and yellow card scheme to address poor behaviour, and this year sees the launch of the Xtreme project in Bassetlaw to help address the issues of young people involved in anti social behaviour.
The third priority for community members is fly tipping and dog fouling. Both are covered by Bassetlaw district council departments - environmental services and environmental health departments respectively. Please continue to report these types of incidents to the respective departments. I am in touch with both departments on a regular basis.
The Group Priority Setting meetings are public meetings and anyone can attend. It would be great to have a representative, or representatives, from each of the parishes at the next meeting. In doing so, a reflection of each individual parish can be shared. The next meeting will be again at Retford Town Hall on Wednesday 11/04/2012 at 1830 hours.
For any further information in relation to the meeting, please call me on the contact number at the end of this report – it would be good to see you there.
Please continue to complete the survey forms which appear on www.communitysurvey.co.uk
The more survey forms that are completed will give a truer reflection of the concerns of community members.
To celebrate the London Olympics this year there will be a Bassetlaw Schools Torch Relay commencing on Monday 20/02/2012 from Worksop Town Hall and finishing on Friday 22/06/2012 at the same location.
The planned dates for the torch arriving at the schools across the Bassetlaw East Clayworth/ Sturton beat area are –
Monday 26/03/2012 – North Leverton C of E school.
Tuesday 27/03/2012 – Sturton le Steeple C of E school.
Wednesday 28/03/2012 – North Wheatley Cof E school.
Thursday 03/05/2012 – Clarborough Primary school.
Please mark the dates down in your diary so that, if possible, you are able to support the individual schools, their pupils and the representatives of the torch relay. I await confirmation of what times the torch will reach the schools but I am sure this will be shared at a time closer to the event.
Please continue to call 101 to report suspicious persons, vehicles and/ or activity across the beat area. I make no apologies for repeating myself in this report, but to re iterate in 2011, and again at the beginning of this year, there has been an increase in the number of calls of this type across the area. Calls of this nature do help to drive reported crime figures down – thanks to you all for your continued support and help.
Do however remember to use 999 for emergencies – where a life is in danger and when a crime is being committed, or has just happened.
For your information my works mobile telephone number, for non urgent calls, is 07525 226838.
Best regards PCSO 8139 Dave Airey.

Nottinghamshire Trading Standards have received information about alarm companies telephoning vulnerable residents and offering free home alarm systems.
Trading Standards never recommend employing a trader based on a cold call.
Nottinghamshire Trading Standards is urging consumers to say no to companies offering these free appliances, claiming they are working with the police or as part of a Government scheme.
The salesman will typically cold call, keen to make a home visit the same day to discuss the installation of a free or cheap alarm. The companies are reported to use high pressure tactics and to scaremonger about rising crime levels in the area, while some are reported to make misleading claims about the alarms being directly linked to the police.
What they fail to mention are the fees that residents will have to pay for the installation, monitoring, upkeep and rapid response facilities, which can add up to thousands of pounds.
If you have received a similar call or are suspicious of a cold caller operating in your area please contact Consumer Direct, the Government's consumer advice service on 08454 04 05 06.
Nottinghamshire Trading Standards recommend the following:
- Keep your front and back doors locked, even when you’re at home. Fix a security chain to your door, and make sure you use it every time someone calls. - If you need work carried out contact the Buy With Confidence scheme for details of trades people who have demonstrated their commitment to fair and honest trading on www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk or 08454 04 05 06.
