On Sunday 13th June members of the Wind Farm Resistance Group visited Penistone,
near Barnsley to see up close the site of wind turbines. Pictured are some which are
about 1/3rd the height of those proposed for Wheatley and Sturton.

18th June 2010 – An Update from Wheatley Wind Farm Resistance Group

A big “Thank You” all those Wheatley households that voted in the recent Parish Council Referendum.

Out of 250 voting papers issued, there were 143 replies, of which 129 voted against the idea of a local wind farm – that’s still a 97% - and over half the whole population.

As it happens Bassetlaw District Council have recently given the public a timely opportunity to comment in the “Local District Framework”. A document, which will outline local plans until 2026. We have seized upon the section on renewable energy options to register our objections to the proposed wind farm in the Wheatley/Sturton area. An amazing 97 households have again responded, and these have been passed to Bassetlaw planners for consideration.

District Councillor Hugh Burton receives a box of response forms to keep Bassetlaw’s planners occupied for a while. Resistance Group Chairman John Anderson gives a hand.

Update from the Wheatley/Sturton Wind Farm Resistance Group

April 19th 2010

bulletWe have continued to determine the extent and scale of the proposed wind farm, and prepare ways of us all making valid objections.  We have been heartened by the general level of support, and indeed offers of financial help.

bulletWheatley Parish Council has now agreed to organise a referendum to seek the views of Wheatley’s electors in order to establish the existence of any support (or objection) to our cause, in order that they may give it their fullest support, should the residents of Wheatley so wish .

bulletAlongside the mandate, we shall give a fact-filled leaflet to all Wheatley households so everyone will have the facts before voting.

bulletOur information is already being shared with other Parish Councils affected.

Local Wind Farm Resistance Group Prepares for Action

The threat of major wind farm in the North Notts villages of Sturton, Clarborough and Wheatley has not gone away. Following last year’s well-attended public meetings in Wheatley and other local villages - in which over 90% of those present expressed their opposition to the development of a wind farm in the area - people were left with the impression that EDF Energy may be persuaded to drop their plans for a ten- turbine farm. This was believed to be the case, as it was based on information given to our local M.P. John Mann, who in turn expressed his optimism that the scheme would be dropped.
The fact is that this scheme is still a distinct possibility and is being actively considered by EDF Onshore Sites UK, who have commissioned Consulting Engineers Parsons Brinckerhoff of Newcastle for the project. It is believed to be in the latter stages of Environmental Assessment - an activity essential prior to lodging a formal Planning Application.
An action group has been formed to combat the threat before planning permission is even requested. The Wheatley group is comprised of concerned local residents, a business representative, a farmer/landowner, together with legal and planning professionals. It aims to target its objections at local and national bodies which can influence the decision-making process, as well as Bassetlaw District Council and Nottingham County Council.
The picture and diagram may help readers to realise the scale of the massive threat to their villages, in terms of landscape, noise and environment.
The resistance group plans to submit to all local residents an outline of what is involved, and ways in which this awesome imposition may be successfully resisted. A soon-to-be-released fact-filled information campaign will show the scale, size and visual impression that the scheme will make on local lives. It will also collate and list valid, legal and persuasive reasons for objection.

Unless EDF or any other developer can be dissuaded by residents of Sturton, Wheatley and Clarborough together with areas east if the Trent– all of whom will be affected by this development - then stand by for a fight, or perhaps a landscape blight far, far, worse than EDF have already inflicted!
