Coffee Morning

On a showery Sunday 25 September, Wheatley Bowls Club held a fundraising Bowls Drive and Coffee morning with over 40 bowlers from around the area taking part in the bowls competition and many more braving the showers to support the coffee morning. Despite the weather, the club raised £430 for Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity chosen by club President, Mr Pip Garner. All who attended really enjoyed the day and we hope to repeat it again next year. The Coffee morning was held as part of Macmillan Cancer Support's Biggest Coffee Morning held across the country.

Coaching Day

Wheatley Bowls Club held a coaching day on July 31 when 22 members of the club, both experienced and
some relatively new to the game, received an afternoon of coaching from Barbara Thompson, Senior Coach
from the Lincs bowls Coaching Association. Barbara, ably assisted by trainee coach
Trevor, and Johnnie and Pam gave everyone interesting and varied exercises to carry out and everyone agreed it had
been a thoroughly enjoyable and extremely useful session and hope to repeat it next season.

Open Tournament

On Sunday 15 May, Wheatley Bowls Club hosted its first major Open Bowls
Tournament. The event, sponsored by EDF Energy, attracted 60 bowlers in 20
teams, mostly from clubs around Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, with one
team travelling from Essex to participate. The tournament was opened by
Pip Garner, President of the Wheatley Club and, despite a chilly day with
persistent showers, the teams enjoyed a full day of competition.
The eventual winners of the tournament, winning £150, were P Cawthorne, W
Bryan and D Taylor from Beckingham. Runners up were R Sivil, M Lambley and
E Dack from Tuxford who won £100 and in third place, winning prize money
of £50 were J Peat, T Lewis and D Alvey from Retford. Teams were presented
with their prizes by Harry Kirk, Chairman of Wheatley Bowls Club.
All who participated agreed the day has been a great success and look
forward to this becoming an annual event.

Bowls club start the 2011 season

Pip Garner bowling the first 'bowl' on Sat 9 April at the Bowls Club
Open Day, the start of the club season. The Open Day attracted 6 new
members and more always welcome !!

2010 marked the 50th Anniversary of the club and was a successful and very happy year.  We marked the occasion with a Bowls Drive and Celebratory Lunch, the weather was wonderful and a great day was had by members and visitors alike.

The club prides itself on its friendly atmosphere and the Invitation Open Day which included a Four Bowls Match followed by Food Fun and Ferret Racing proved a great success.  The annual Strawberry Tea, club BBQs and friendly inter club matches made for a great year.

The Club continues to participate in the Gainsborough League, Pensioners League and on Saturday afternoons lively matches between members are played on the green.

The club is a wonderful asset to the community, members come from all surrounding villages, all ages, so make a note to come and have a go.  Spare woods are available for you to try and friendly advice to get you started, you just need flat shoes.

It truly is a sport where young and old can play alongside each other in a lovely village setting.

Look forward to seeing you.
