This
year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wheatley Bowls Club. Mr
W.A. Robinson had an idea and eight founder members started a bowling club on
the vicarage lawn. The club played
there for 2 years then moved to the playing fields, now the site of the tennis
club. In the 1980s the club moved
to its present position and one of the founder members, Mr Pip Garner, is still
an active member. The
bowls club continues to thrive and participates in a Gainsborough League,
Pensioners League and inter club matches. However
on Saturday afternoons lively matches are played on the green between members.
The
season will start on the 17th of April this year and new members will
be very welcome. This club is a
wonderful asset to the village and members come from all the surrounding
villages, all ages, so make a note to come and have a go.
Spare woods (bowls) are available for you to try and friendly advice to
get you started. It is truly a
sport where young and old can play alongside each other and enjoy an afternoons
game. Look forward to seeing you. President
